Revamping my series in progress
February 19, 2017
Going back to my last post about world building I’ve discovered why it’s a good idea to work on a lot of that before getting into serous writing. The current project I’m working on is my Urban Fantasy series. The original concept was a guy caught in the middle of the war between Heaven and Hell, Good and Evil, Coke and Pepsi, etc. He’s a mercenary who works for the highest bidder and is apolitical. Once a job is done then the job is done and he moves on.
I wrote three full short stories and was in the middle of number four when the ol’ creative juices started a flowing. I also realized that story after story of my protagonist vs a demon every time could and would get boring. I slept on it and eventually came to the decision that while the war between Good and Evil would be a significant part of the overall story I would also incorporate more. A lot more.
This of course means coming up with some minor, or major, changes to the previous stories to bring them in line with the new world view. I know this type of world is common, and maybe over done, but I’m hoping to bring some flavor and pzazz to mine. I’m also working to make it feel lived in, like you could be walking in it right now and just not know it.
Right, the piece I’m working on right now deals a bit with Voodoo and Black Magic. I’ve begun outlining a new short story to go between some of my others. Werewolves. Also I’ve been drilling down on an overarching story. It’s a slow going process and I’m sure it’ll be revised all to hell and back but it’s fun.
Later today I’ll be sitting down to work on some world/sector building with my wife. We’re jointly playing in a universe I had originally started as a RPG campaign but it fell by the wayside. I enjoyed the world creation so much that I kept working on it. More to come.
In progress news I crossed over 69K words on my current work. I’m closing in on the end and looking forward to revising it. I still need a title but I’m thinking Red Magic.
Once I finish this work then I’m going to back to the beginning and take apart my old works and bring them up to speed. Once I do that I’ll be looking for Beta Readers. Wish me luck.
