From the back burner
March 5, 2017
I finished the first draft of the tentatively titled Red Magic. I’ve discovered with each new project I work on and finish that they are longer, more descriptive, and in my opinion (I’m biased) better written.
The thing is Red Magic would be the equivalent of book four or book five of this series of sorts. I have three more or less finished short story to novella ranged works with my protagonist, Vince West, then my Nano 2016 work “Break a Leg” and then “Red Magic.”
I originally wrote what I call SS1 (Short Story 1) more as a proof of concept piece. It was about 12K words long and pretty fast paced. I finished it then put it on the back burner to go to SS2. I felt strongly about it but going back and rereading it over a year later I can see where I was writing wise at that point and so many ways to make it better. One thing that was glaring a couple of my “chapters” were about five hundred words long. Not a whole lot there. Time to get to work.
For starters I’d like to get it up to the 20-25K word range, maybe longer. I need to add things to bring it in line with the New World Order. Okay, that was a bit dramatic but several items were changed during a deeper world building process. Also, the Mcguffin of the piece is now a part of a larger over-arching story.
The blurb in progress goes a little something like “When Vince West gets hired to find a missing man he should have expected it wouldn’t be easy. Finding out the man was embroiled with a demon complicated things even more. Can West find his quarry and stop the Demon before it’s too late?”
This was the first story set in my Urban Fantasy world. It feels good to go back and look at and work on it.
Original word count 12323
After revising the first chapter – 13017.
In other news I’m a big boy now. I have business cards! I need to get a holder so I can hand them out when I’m in public but it’s a step closer to where I’m looking to be.
As always if you have any questions or comments please post them and I’ll answer as soon as I can!
